About Us
We're Jonathan and Alice Sommers. You're probably here for the coffee, not a history lesson, but just in case you're interested, here's our story.
The Early days
Roasting in Dalton, OH
Believe it or not I grew up disliking coffee. Gasp! Maybe I hadn't tried good coffee or maybe my brain just hadn't developed enough to realize how good it was. Either way, I fell in love with coffee in my 20s and haven't looked back.
I love people and I realized that good coffee can bring people together which leads to conversations and relationships. I decided to start roasting coffee and set up my first small roaster in the basement of my parents house.
Getting married, Moving to detroit
Big Changes
In 2020 Alice and I got married. We bought a fixer upper house in Dalton and got to work. I moved my roaster into a shed I finished out and continued roasting from there.
In 2021 we felt called to move to Detroit to manage a ministry cafe called Awake Cafe. I set up my roaster in the cafe which provided a great place to roast while also setting a wonderful vibe for the cafe. In August of 2021 I installed a larger, higher quality roaster which let my increase my output with better conistency.
Current
launching the website
In June of 2026 I turned over the management of Awake Cafe to someone else to allow me to focus more on my roasting and my growing family. We launched our website to provide a better ordering experience for our customers and to keep things organized.
I am very grateful to our wonderful customers who continue my business and family and look forward to continue providing you with great coffee.
